THE IMPORTANCE OF CREATING IN A WORLD THAT CONSUMES TOO MUCH

*This is not a rant about consumerism—just some thoughts on creating vs. consuming 🙂

Okay, the reality is- we live in a world designed for overconsumption. Scroll this. Binge that. Add to cart. It’s easy, addictive, and we all do it. But here’s what I realised (even before becoming a full time artist):

When you consume too much and create too little, something feels “off”.

It feels like the balance has tipped the wrong way, it leaves you feeling restless and uncomfortable.

Creating changes that; and here’s why:

  • It’s grounding: Making something out of nothing just feels good.
  • It rewires your brain: Creating stimulates your brain to form new neural pathways, and this helps you innovate. It makes you feel free, seen, valued.

However, some guardrails (when creating as an adult, particularly!):

  • Don’t create to impress: The joy isn’t in showcasing what you create, but in the act itself.
  • Keep your hobbies goal-free: No end game, no productivity metrics, no side hustle pressure.
  • Make it judgement-free: this is the hardest, but please refrain from judging yourself

So next time you’re tempted to scroll or shop for that hit of dopamine, pause and consider making something. Because when you create, you give back to yourself that balance you’re missing.
